It is celebrating its birthday with its 85th exhibition, Boutique. The show, says curator Ying Kwok, is a first for the centre because it has joined forces with high street names, including Harvey Nichols, to generate an added commercial interest in the show.
The four artists, Anthony Key, Nina Chua, Lisa Cheung and Pamela So, have taken very different approaches: Anthony explores the notion of Chinese identities through items such as takeaway cartons and chopsticks; Lisa incorporates Chinese patterns into Nike 95 Air Max Blue
Chinese artists over from China, and from all over the world, who are leaders in their field.

Soon, it was exhibiting work by artists who would go on to become stars of the international art market, including Liu Xiao Dong, Gordon Cheung and Anthony Key, and in 2003 the centre moved to its purpose built, award winning building on Thomas Street in the city's colourful Northern Quarter.
"But half of the city still doesn't know it has got the only Chinese Arts Centre in the UK on the doorstep. People do still come in and expect to see traditional crafts and calligraphy, but the centre is more about cutting edge art.
But it was 10 years before the centre really caught the attention of the public in the lead up to the Hong Kong handover in 1997. Increased interest allowed the gallery to become a national charity and to bring international Chinese artists to the city.

"It's a real milestone to reach 21 for Manchester and for us," says Alyson Doocey, marketing manager at the Chinese Arts Centre.
The centre, which was opened in 1986 by a group of Manchester based Chinese artists, has grown from a small gallery and teahouse in Chinatown to a contemporary art showcase for the world's most talented Chinese artists.
Originally, the gallery provided a solution to a problem; the Nike Air Max 95 Infant founding artists were unable to find contemporary spaces for their work and sought support from Manchester City Council and the Arts Council England to set up an alternative gallery.

The installation and the anniversary has also given the centre's team time to reflect on the amount of work that still needs to be done to change perceptions of the Chinese art genre to bring it into conventional galleries.
