the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 400 medley relay. In the process, she broke school records in the 100 freestyle (48.77) and 200 individual medley (1:58.37).Years of improvement and enthusiasm led Hartigan to the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., last weekend. Her times were not her best, as the senior Cowgirl swam the 200 individual medley in 2:01.76, the 100 backstroke in 53.52 and the 100 freestyle in 49.62.Under the greatest spotlight in collegiate swimming, Hartigan fell seconds short of her goals. But the ending, though disappointing, doesn't diminish a career filled with wide smiles in practice and relentless improvement in meets."We were expecting a little bit more and were hoping she'd swim a little bit faster than she did, but she had a great career here," Johnson said. "One meet doesn't define what she's done over four years."Hartigan's impact on Wyoming swimming extends outside the pool as well. For up and coming regional swimmers, she serves as proof that you can stay at home and succeed."There's some kids that we lost that went on to bigger programs," Johnson said, "and we feel like the only way to legitimize ourselves is to be at that meet [the NCAA Championships]."Hartigan did that, and more. But now, swimming is once again behind her. The senior is taking an extended break to focus on her classes and graduating with a degree in elementary education.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: In her senior season at Wyoming, swimmer Morgan Hartigan qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in three events the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.HE SAID IT: "She just loves to be in the pool. From the first day that we had her here, she showed up at the morning practice with a big smile on her face." Wyoming coach Tom Johnson. Before she conquered, Morgan Hartigan quit.Hartigan started swimming when she was 4 years old, but gave the sport up a short time later to pursue track and field instead. She didn't drop into another competitive pool until junior high school, and that decision was more fueled by availability than passion."I guess it kind of fit in with my track schedule, so I'd go to swimming and then I'd have the next two indoor/outdoor seasons of track," Hartigan said. "I always wanted to be active and do something, and swimming fit in."Last weekend, Hartigan became the first Wyoming Cowgirl to qualify for the NCAA Championships in an individual medley event. She swam three events the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke on a national stage, representing the brown and gold alongside the nation's elite swimmers. After completing a memorable four year career in Laramie, Hartigan and her coach, Tom Johnson, are certainly thankful that "swimming fit in."Hartigan's accomplishments in the state of Wyoming, however, reach far beyond UW. The 5 foot 7 Cheyenne native also pierced through the water at Cheyenne East High School, where she was named an All American in 2008 and 2009 in the 100 breaststroke. She won state championships in both the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly.Growing up, Hartigan didn't dream about wearing a brown bucking Grey Nike Air Max Womens horse on her cap. the 200 individual medley.Once primarily a breaststroker, she sought to expand her skill set. During her junior season, Hartigan eyed the backstroke. And whether Johnson initially liked it or not, she wouldn't take "no" for an answer."I was the one saying, 'Coach, can I swim backstroke?' And of course he said, 'No, you're not a backstroker.' Every day when we would have optional swims in practice, I would swim backstroke despite the coaches' wishes, because that's what I wanted to do," Hartigan said, punctuating the anecdote with a smile and a laugh. At this season's Mountain West Championships, Hartigan shattered everything school records, personal bests, expectations. She earned All Mountain West honors in four events Air Max 95 Green Grey Black

proximity to family being most important. She hasn't looked back."It's been great, because my family is there to support me at almost every meet," Hartigan said. "I know a lot of girls and boys on our team don't have that. That's a big part of why I think I've come so far in swimming."From the very beginning, Johnson recognized a rare enthusiasm in his incoming freshman. Hartigan insisted on traveling to Laramie to train with the Cowgirls, even in the summer before she stepped on campus. This wasn't a requirement or an expectation. But Hartigan made it a routine."She just loves to be in the pool," Johnson said. "From the first day that we had her here, she showed up at the morning practice with a big smile on her face."Steady improvement, then, came as no surprise. Hartigan trained with an infectious enthusiasm, and results followed. Throughout four years in the pool, her time in the 100 freestyle improved by nearly four seconds. She trimmed more than seven seconds off of her time in Nike Air Max 95 Black And Red
