Frances Carlson, Chattahoochee Tech's lead instructor with the Early Childhood Care and Education Department, said Bright from the Start adopted the rule three years ago.
Many licensed day cares in Cobb County already have similar requirements in place, including Smyrna KinderCare off Concord Road in Smyrna.

Bright from the Start has also been very supportive so that current teachers do not lose their jobs, she said.
"They are very serious with teachers working with children and having this knowledge, but they don't want to be punitive to teachers who, for whatever reason, are having difficulty achieving these credentials," she said.
"Research continues to show that there's a strong correlation between teacher qualifications and quality of care given," Carlson said. "Georgia wanted to improve that quality of care because Georgia's quality, statistically, has not been as strong as quality in other states."
"Personally, I've always hired someone with either three to five years or some type of education in child care, and I just think that's good for everybody," she said.
"I think the best part of it is the way we learn here," she said. "It's the way we're supposed to be teaching the kids. It's very hands on, interactive and fun."
"I haven't gotten any sense that they are going to raid or catch people without their certificates," she said.
Carlson said Bright from the Start is checking qualifications through the facilities, which are required to report staff information and credentials annually.
at King's Kids in Kennesaw while earning her associate degree in early childhood education, and began taking classes in 2010 shortly after learning that the certification would be required.
Center Director Annita Iobst said she implemented them years ago because the school's owners, Knowledge Universe, required it.

Additionally, Iobst said that the Georgia Pre K program requires them to already have CDA requirements for the lead roles and assistants in each class, so the Dec. 1 deadline should not affect her school at all.

Bright from the Start has also created a program to help offset the cost, along with providing the HOPE Scholarship and PELL grant.
