"Walsall Market did very well over the Christmas period. It was packed out from late November right up until Christmas itself. People were buying presents and the food stalls were really popular. Matthew Kelly, head of Birmingham Markets, said that all three markets had been successful at pulling the crowds in this year. He said: "Our footfall was up 35,000 on last year, showing that the markets are holding their own in the current economic times."
She added that the Market Hall offers traders competitive rates. "When you're just starting out, it's also a great way to keep your overheads down whilst having room to grow your business," she added.
The market ran for six weeks and is the largest of its kind outside Germany and Frankfurt. It sold an array of handmade goods, Christmas decorations and traditional German food and drink.
Entertainment, such as music and a carousel, was also used to pull the crowds in.
Mr Kelly added that the most popular areas of the markets were the food stalls. The Indoor Market offers a large selections of fish and meat and the Open Market provides an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Crowds flocked to the wide range of markets that the region has to offer including the famous Bull Ring Markets in Birmingham.
Owner of Cook Carve, Mel Ling, saw his customers rise by 50 per cent over the Christmas trading period. He said: "It's down to shoppers wanting to beat the national trend for spiralling food prices. This Christmas was fantastic for us, you wouldn't think we were in the middle of a recession."

The Bull Ring Open Market, Rag Market and Indoor Market enjoyed a successful Christmas, with customers exploring hundreds of stalls, hunting for Christmas presents and food for the festive season.
In Shrewsbury, The Market Hall had a huge rise in customers through their doors as a way of beating the credit crunch.
Mr Kelly said that the market stalls were at an advantage as they were able to react quickly to trends in fashion and were varied in order to cater for all tastes.
Markets in the Midlands had a rise in popularity this Christmas after shoppers deserted the high streets in favour of bargain prices.

He admitted that, although shopping at markets wasn't as convenient as supermarkets, the experience is a lot more enjoyable.
Although the food stalls did well at Christmas, the fashion and luxury item stalls were in high competition with the high streets after the early start to the sales.
Elsewhere in the Midlands, Walsall Market, which offers a wide range of goods on more than 90 stalls, has attracted a new range of customers who wouldn't normally have shopped there.
"The traders can give expert advice on exactly where the food has come from, as they provided it," he said. "They can give great advice about their produce, too, which you just wouldn't get at supermarkets."
Mr Kelly said the Frankfurt Christmas Market was a particular asset to Birmingham, as it attracted tourists who would not normally shop in the city centre. The German themed market, which returned for its eighth year, attracted more than two million visitors to Victoria Square. He said: "It is completely different to any of our existing markets, and has such a high profile that we can use it to draw shoppers into the centre. Hopefully they will have a look around at what else we have on offer while they are here."
