First, I think Christian Prudhomme is exactly right in reducing the number of flat stages which, unless you are a sprinter, are relatively boring except for the finish. It also makes for less drama in the overall GC contenders when there are so many non competitive days for them to simply take it easy in the peloton. He is totally right in Air Max Mens
One other idea, which may be too novel but still worthy of consideration, is to have a fork in the road that lasts for, say, 20km 50km or so before coming back together again. don't know that has been tried before or not, is a team stage (as opposed to time trial). Teams would be staggered by, say, 10 15 minutes for a 150km 175km stage with at least a category 2 or a couple category 3 climbs in there. The team time would be when the last rider or second to last rider, crosses the line. Would add more to the team dynamic of the race, which has its place in the TDF.
I would focus on first limiting the flat stages to no more than 5 in any TDF: 2 in the first week, the last day in Paris, and 2 in between at most. That leaves 15 or more stages for more drama and excitement for the whole field, not just the sprinters at the end.

Like today's stage 10, I like having what could have been a sprinters stage improved with a couple medium climbs to make it a possible breakaway stage, which it was after the tough climbs in the Alps. I was disappointed for example that Team Radioshack had so many flats in the cobblestone stages but perhaps that wasn't bad luck after all but their choice of tires? In any case I think having a cobblestone stage or two early on like this year is a way to shake things up in the early going that is needed to maintain interest after the first time trial and prior to the first mountain stages.
Christian Prudhomme: I believe simply that it is no longer possible to do a whole week of the same racing. But we are in France and the geography of this county is such that there a large areas without mountains. If we were in Italy or Spain it would be easier because there are hills everywhere. But I want to attempt things. It might not always work, but I want to put things in place that will shake things up. That is our obligation. If it makes for great racing or not is up to the racers. But it is up to us to propose things.
