Marietta Athletic Director Paul Hall said the biggest issue with naming the court after Hood wasn't getting the approval the Marietta School Board voted unanimously to go forward with the dedication but where to put Hood's moniker on the playing floor. After considering the baseline and sidelines, the decision was made to put the name Charlie Hood Court in the middle of the floor. The name will arch above and below the M in the Black Air Max 16
Beginning next season, the basketball teams at Marietta will be playing Air Max Evolution Pack on Charlie Hood Court in the Marietta Gardens.
"Like I said when I was inducted into the Marietta Athletic Hall of Fame," said Hood, who is also a member of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. "I didn't score a point or get at rebound. This is definitely a tribute to all those players and coaches I worked with."
The new floor design will be constructed next month during Fourth of July week, but the official dedication will come at the first home basketball game of the 2011 12 season when Marietta plays host Lithia Springs on Nov. 17.
For Hood, the honor is well deserved. During his legendary career as head of the Blue Devils, Hood compiled a record of 715 284. His teams recorded 34 winning seasons, 20 state tournament appearances and claimed a pair of state championships, the first in 1983 and then again in 1999.
Hood said he was looking forward to seeing the new floor design and was happy to hear that Hall had picked up on his color scheme.
with Hood receiving his own honor, the family cycle is Air Max Design
center court circle, providing the fans an opportunity to see the tribute to Hood from either side of the gymnasium.
The announcement also brought back fond memories from Hood's own high school career.
"Marietta navy blue trimmed in cardinal (red)," Hall said. "Charlie always tried to use a little cardinal on his uniforms so we thought it would really make his name standout."
"Years ago there was some scarlet that was used on the uniforms," Hood said. "I wasn't too crazy about it so I did some of ours with cardinal. It's just a trim color to help the (traditional blue and white uniforms) stand out."
For 40 years, Charlie Hood was on the sideline during Marietta High School's boys basketball games. From this point forward, he will always be at center court.
Of course for Hood, his greatest satisfaction as a coach came with having more than 60 of his players go on and compete at on the collegiate level.
Charlie Hood to stand at center court again
The lettering will be in traditional Marietta blue, but with a Charlie Hood flair.
"My reflection went right back to my high school," said Hood, whose entire family played at Collinsville (Ala.) High School. That includes his uncle, former University of Alabama All American Lindy Hood. "About 15 or 18 years ago they named the gym there after him. It was a great tribute."
