Thomas Mathews, artesian well sinker of Pendleton, gave evidence and his recommendations. He told the inquiry that: "The well covering should be made of iron and also the stages at the bottom should be replaced which would give the workmen some safety."

This tank is fed from a well in the brewery and also from the town's mains water supply. Joe must have thought that the engine was still running at the well, so went to turn it off. Inside the room, the well top was covered with wooden boards, visible from the room looked to be in a good state of repair and not showing any decay. Unknown to the staff, the underside of the timber had been rotting away for many years, no inspections had taken place, so the hazard grew. An accident waiting to happen is the term used.

Labourer Albert Walkden of Railway Terrace heard that Joe could be down the well, so volunteered to go down suspended from a rope and plank to rescue him. At first he was unable to find him, other tunnels lead off from the main well, but after about ten minutes he found him below the water level. The inquest was held at the Co operative Reading Rooms.
When the Most Haunted team filmed their programme from the brewery of J W Lees at Middleton Junction a few years ago, Derek Acora gained vibes from an area in the building which was once an old well, and he pointed and said "someone died down there. but it's sealed off now." My first thought was of the well sinking when a man died, this is related in the small book entitled, Noted Breweries of Great Britain and Ireland.
Well, would you believe it? This week we continue our Middleton Junction theme featuring some previously unseen images thanks to Alan Ogden.
Francis then noticed one of the boards covering the well was missing, he then raised the alarm.
This, along with the installation of galvanised beams, was recommended. A verdict of "Accidently drowning whilst standing on the covering which had grown rotten with age." was recorded.

This I took to be what Derek had picked up on. To my surprise I have unearthed another tragedy at the well site. On May 8 1907 Joseph Malpas aged 38 years who was employed as under brewer, died when he entered the cellar and fell down the well. Henry Hilton, a carter of Peach street, Middleton Junction, who was the last person to see Malpas alive, said: "I spoke to Joe in the yard about 6.40 the previous night and pointed out that the tank at the top of the yard was overflowing with water."

Reference is given to the sinking of the 100ft well which was 10 feet wide. The entry states: "This well was sunk at an enormous cost, for the treacherous nature of the ground, necessitated, among other things, the use of huge cast iron castings strongly bolted together weighing some score of tons. It was work of great difficulty and expense, and was accomplished without the sacrifice of the life of one of the workmen."

On the morning of May 9, engineer, Mr Francis Hubert Morton found the cellar door open and the gas lighting full on, which he thought was strange, he had turned them off the previous night at the time he had shut the engine down, which was forty five minutes before Joe had entered the room Air Max 95 Knit
