Mervue is derived from the view of the Sea (from the French word, Mer). It borders Renmore, Ballybane, and Castlegar. As you head towards Galway city on the Monivea road, Wellpark on the left hand side is in the Parish of Mervue, while the right hand side of the road is in the parish of Saint Patrick. Mervue extends towards Renmore and the main Galway - Dublin road, is the division between the two. Its still classified locally as Old and New Mervue, simply because it was built in two stages. The first building took place in 1956 and phase two was started about ten years later. Old Mervue had its streets and avenues named after famous Irish people..
Mervue used to be in the parish of Castlegar and now has its own Church (of the Holy Family) on the corner of Walter Macken road and Michael Collins road, as well as a Grotto and small graveyard, near it. Beside the church is a fairly new funeral home, and Mervue has a local Credit Union, across the road. Sport Mervue is best known in sporting circles for its Soccer triumphs and has very strong community support which gathers monies for the club through the Mervue Lottery. There exists two seperate websites; the Soccer website and the under twelves soccer website. Notable figures in the building and maintaining of the club are Jimmy Sullivan ( a.k.a. Skip / Skipper ) and Declan Mc Donnell (former Mayor of Galway City). There are others of course and a powerful community spirit is present, on a non-administrative level. Incidentally, a Mervue playing pitch (Sullivan Park) was named after Jimmy Sullivans' input over the years. Local Business.
