Galway City

Galway City, positioned where the River Corrib meets Galway Bay, began it growth due to its location;

  • Close to the *Sea.
  • Close to land of course.
  • Its shelter from the Atlantic Ocean and associated winds.

Many cities have these characteristics for practical reasons as they are viewed at a point in time.

One could take to the hills or take to the waters as defensive moves and still have trading advantages.

Anyway, Galway City as it is today is a blend of multi-cultures and ethnic groups, coupled with Irish people. Industry and amenities will naturally attract from surrounding counties as well.

*Close to the sea.

Anyone with half an eye can see that general traffic congestion in and around Galway City can be explained (at least in part), by its water locked position. To the north-east, Lough Corrib makes driving quite difficult and the Sea to the South West is not much better, lol.

Another bridge is in the pipeline to add to Wolfe Tone, The Salmon Weir, O' Briens Bridge and the Quincentennial Bridge. This new bridge is set to cross from Menlo to Bushypark and alleviate traffic for those wishing to avoid the city centre.

The centre of the city is Eyre Square

The Great Fire

In the 1950's, a premises occupied by Hygeia in Nun's Island, Galway city, caught fire and the local residents had to be evacuated. It was feared at the time that the wind might sweep the fire up Nun's Island, but it didn't happen. However, the fire is said to have last three days.

While the fire at the bottom of Eyre Square / Merchants road, did more structural damage, this one lasted longer.
